Hluboká nad Vltavou

Our Region

The history of this region goes back to kings and kingdoms, to becoming a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to creating the Czechoslovakian nation in 1918, being run over by the Germans in 1939 and then by Communism in 1948. 1989 was witness to the most spectacular revolution in world history: Millions of people gathered in the heart of Prague, raising little bells or just their keys, to ring their protest to the reigning Communist regime. The ‘Velvet Revolution’ allowed Czechoslovakia to finally become a democracy. In 1992 the two nations of Czech and Slovakia separated, each forming their own independent nation and joining the free market. Also this step was taken with wisdom and with regards to keeping peace in the region. In May 2004, the Czech Republic was one of the 10 new states to join the European Union. In the last few months of 2007, the Czech Republic joined the Schengen States of the European Union.

The Czech Republic claims to be the heart of Europe and emphasises this fact with a small ‘milestone’ not far from the village of Hluboka. Our neighbors are Slovakia to the East, Austria to the South, Germany to the West and Northwest, and Poland to North-north-east. And so, situated directly between eastern Europe and western Europe the claim might very well be justified!

The South Bohemian region experiences all four seasons: starting with a beautiful spring in bloom, the year will continue to a summer of alternative rain and sunshine with luscious green pastures and woods, to an autumn that brings forth all the colors promised by fall, and ending in a winter that in one year is mild with just a bit of snow to a winter covered in sparkling white and many degrees below zero.

Culture
The Czech culture is enhanced by a great love for music, theater, and the arts, offering many possibilities, to those interested, for visiting operas, ballets, concerts and art galleries. Being a nation of thinkers and writers, much of world literature has been enriched by contributions from Czechs. The Czech towns and countryside are a reminder of childhood fairy tales with the many castles and towers and beautiful house facades. Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic has become a cosmopolitan city and a focal point for millions of tourists.

As a whole the Czech people are kind and welcoming nation, though shy in taking the first step. But where a smile is given, a smile is returned, and invitations are accepted, happily.

Hluboká nad Vltavou
The infra-structure of South Bohemia, where Hluboká is situated, offers a divers scope of entertainment and learning possibilities from operas and concerts to museums and galleries, and from ice-hockey and tennis to martial arts and “street-ball” tournaments.

Hluboká is famous for the beautiful Schwarzenberg Castle and the quaint little village at its feet. The center of the village offers an amazing number of hotels, restaurants, a cinema, tourist shops and supermarkets, the post office, and a small health center and pharmacy. Ten kilometers away, in the city of České Budějovice (Budweis), the regional capital of South Bohemia, one finds most of the things one is looking for in the center of the town.
