Welcome to the Residential Programme at Townshend

In the dormitories, we are working with an amazing age group. The youth who are entrusted into our hands come from all kinds of backgrounds and bring with them a variety of talents, all kinds of qualities, all kinds of personalities and all kinds of headaches. One moment they are delightful beings, bursting with joy and laughter, the next moment they are fighting for justice and freedom, and again a few moments later they are pushing to be first in the food line. A happy ‘Hello’ may at any minute turn into ‘the look’ that every mother knows which conveys irritation and anger; a frustrated, tearful eye might at any second turn into a bright light, emanating pleasure and joy. Truly a very amazing age group!

As Residential Director since 1994, I have had the privilege of working with many different dormitory parents and it has been an overwhelming experience for me to note the loving kindness, the care, the patience, the generosity and the tireless sacrifices which the dormitory parents put into their work.

I would like to extend our heartfelt welcome to young and old to come and to take part in this most remarkable entity that has evolved throughout the years and to experience a community life that is wonderfully unique in its individuality.
