Dorm Life

The objective of the Townshend International School is that students receive an holistic education while attending school. As such the Residential Program constitutes a very important part of school life with great emphasis on moral and ethical education.

Students are provided with schedules, routines and guidelines which enable them to learn and grow in a supportive environment. The priority of the Dormitory Parents is to assist students to be happy, safe and healthy. Although the Dormitory Parents and the assisting staff do their best to show flexibility and consideration for the different needs of the individual children, the priority set in decision making is the welfare of the entire dormitory community. In this respect parents are asked for understanding, cooperation and support in helping to make their child’s stay in the Townshend dormitories effective and fruitful, and they are asked to stay in constant contact with their children.

The Dormitory Parents and their Assistants provide the children with a home-life. Children learn to keep their living environment clean, are taught to do their own laundry, and to do dorm duties for their community. Day trips to Prague, Linz, and Vienna are regularly planned; some trips or programmes are 'all dorm' events as they are part of teaching the children the importance of committing to one’s family. Uniforms are expected to be worn during class times. During non-school times, students are asked to dress modestly and be an example of cleanliness. Pocket money is controlled, with the goal to teach a large number of children to live together as the members of one family in which there is a balanced financial variance. The Townshend Residential Programme encourages all students to partake in discussion workshops and all members of the dormitory meet in the evenings for a short time of prayer and meditation to end the day. Parents visiting during the school year always have the opportunity to meet with teachers and other staff to discuss their child’s progress.

Dormitory Parents
Dormitory Parents are on 24hr duty, seeing to the every day needs of the students, listening to their problems and befriending them in their troubled moments. They train the students to, independently, take care of their own hygiene, to keep their rooms clean, and to respect all other inhabitants of the dormitory. Dormitory Parents stay in contact with the school and inform themselves of the academic progress of the students.
