English Support Fee

The fee is applied to students in the ESL (English – Second Language) programme. All students of non-native English-speaking countries will be enrolled in the English support programme unless they:

  • Provide an IELTS certificate with the necessary average score (see table below) prior to arriving, or
  • Take the English test after arriving at Townshend and demonstrate the necessary IELTS-equivalent level, or
  • Achieve the necessary level after assessment at the end of any semester.
All students of native English-speaking countries will be exempt from the programme unless their report card indicates a level of English lower than the necessary IELTS score. An IELTS test or Townshend internal equivalent can be used to determine this. IELTS Average Score, or Townshend Equivalent: Grade 7 to Level II (Grades 7 – 11): 5.5 Level III to Level IV (Grades 12 -13): 6.0 There are two IELTS exams: IELTS General and IELTS Academic. Please take the IELTS General exam, as the IELTS Academic exam is for university-level students. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency by over 9,000 organisations worldwide. For further information about testing, please visit
