Gr 5 Study Guide: Plants


Photosynthesis

*the process by which a plant makes food

*energy is stored in the plant as plant sugars

*plant sugars are made from water and carbon dioxide using energy from sunlight *carbon dioxide is absorbed and oxygen is given off

*we breathe in the oxygen and breathe out the carbon dioxide

*stomata are tiny pores or "mouths" on a leaf that take in gases to help make food for a plant

*chlorophyll is the part of the plant cell that uses light energy from the sun to produce sugars, it gives the plant its green colour


Pollination

*the process of moving pollen to the female parts of the plant

*pollination can occur between two plants or a single plant

*be able to briefly explain how pollination works: "pollen from one plant is carried by the wind or insects and hopefully lands on the sticky carpels of another plant (or the same kind) to pollinate it"

Fertilisation

*the process that occurs in the pistil where the seed begins to form, when the

pollen grain (male sex cell) and the ova (the female sex cell) combines to make a seed * the egg (ova) is inside the ovule which is the inner part of the ovary

* be able to describe the path of fertilisation: "a pollinator touches the anther and pollen grains stick to it. It brushes up against the sticky stigma and the pollen sticks to it. The pollen grains go down the style (pistil) until they meet the ova in the ovary"


Seed Dispersal

*the scattering or carrying away of seeds from the plant that produced them

*be able to write information about each type of dispersal method: Human dispersal, water dispersal, wind, animal dispersal, mechanical (explosion) dispersal (pgs 12-­20)



Germination

*the process of a sprout growing from a seed

* the three things a seed needs to grow are: warmth,water, air

* the seed doesn't need soil to germinate because it stores all of its nutrients (food) inside in the endosperm



Parts of a Plant

* be able to label the parts of a plant, detailed parts of a flower including: male and female flower parts (pg 5)


Life Cycle of a Plant

* be able to put the processes in the life cycle in correct order: fertilisation, germination, pollination, seed dispersal, seed production, flowering plant (pg 25)


Important Info

* animals and plants have a big difference: plants can make their own food * a plant's stem supports the leaves and flower, takes food to the lower parts of the plant, transports water to the upper parts

*a plant's roots take in water and nutrients (food) from the soil and anchor (keep) the plant firmly in the soil

* a flower produces seeds and the fruit protects the seed, male flowers produce pollen, female flowers produce eggs

* a taproot is the long, thick main root
